Highlights from the NS/ PEI Branch
Educational Development Session
Halifax, NS - May 4, 2012 New!

After a very busy but
rewarding year, the membership of
the NS/ PEI Branch convened in
Halifax for an educational session
and Annual General Meeting at the
Four Points Sheraton Convention
Centre. The morning session was
presented by Patsy Rawding, IPCNS
(pictured below), who presented the
topics:
-
Infection Prevention and Control
NS: Who are We?
- C. difficile
Outbreak in Cape Breton: Lessons
Learned
Public health implications of
personal services and body
modification was the theme of our
afternoon session. We attended a
live webinar presentation from
British Columbia by Prabjit Barn,
National Collaborating Centre of
Environmental Health, entitled ".
One of our own branch members,
Carrie Fraser, NS Health and
Wellness, presented the topic "NS
Body Art Act: The Nova Scotia
Story".
It had been nearly three years since
the last AGM, so there was much new
business to discuss regarding
national developments, notice of
motions, and executive officers'
reports. Some highlights of the AGM
included:
- Motion carried for 2 new
Branch Executive positions -
Councillor, Southern Region, and
President Elect
- 4 new incumbents and 1 returning
officer in Branch Executive
positions: Doreen Mackley,
President; Wanda Timmons, Secretary;
Sara Morrison, Central Region; Dana
MacDonald, Councillor, Northern
Region; Sean O'Toole,
President-Elect
- The
treasurer's report focused on the
significant success of our
branch-hosted National Conference
in 2011
- Dues
increased by 25$; motion carried
by National CIPHI, starting
January 1, 2012
Past-President Barry MacGregor
(below) made some closing remarks.
He stated that although the past few
years as President were challenging,
he found the experience extremely
rewarding. He encouraged all
members, especially newcomers and
ones who may not have been involved
at the executive branch level to be
motivated to volunteer in that
capacity.
Our new President, Doreen Mackley
was welcomed by Barry to say a few
words. She took the opportunity to
thank Barry for the instrumental
role he played as the President,
particularly in the National
Conference coordination. As a
co-chair of the conference, she felt
his support as Branch President
greatly contributed to the
conference's successes.
We will miss you Barry! We also look
forward to having Doreen Mackley as
President, and appreciate all the
experience she will bring to this
position.

Conference Award Presented New!

Carrie Fraser was the proud recipient
of the Branch NEC Award for 2012. She
was awarded the 500$ funding, which
can be applied to an upcoming National
Conference registration fee.
Her work as an environmental health
officer with NS Department of Health
and Wellness has been instrumental in
establishing new legislation in the
province aimed at reducing the risk of
communicable disease transmission in
the body art industry. She is also
responsible for the establishment of a
national working group on the subject,
which she chairs.
Carrie has also played a significant
role as facilitator and connector
amongst her public health colleagues
and stakeholders, clearly
demonstrating the skills,
competencies, and capacities that
Certified Public Health Inspectors
have to offer the public health system
in Nova Scotia.
Congratulations Carrie!
