Week Cape Breton Post: by Laura Jean Grant SYDNEY - A profession which ensures Canadians have everything from safe drinking water to acceptable rental housing conditions is being recognized across the country this week. Environmental Public Health Week, which began Jan. 3 and concludes Jan. 9, is designed to celebrate the work of all environmental public health professionals and recognize the importance of environmental public health programs in the healthcare system. Bruce Morrison, an inspector with Public Health Services and president of the Nova Scotia/Prince Edward Island branch of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI), said the week is an important means of drawing attention to a profession which many people don't know much about. "It's the one time all the (CIPHI) associations across Canada come together to bring awareness to our role in public health in Canada," he said. ![]() Morrison said the demand for public health inspectors is on the rise and noted the University College of Cape Breton is one of only six educational institutions in the country which offer the program needed to become a certified a public health inspector. Gary Gallivan, co-ordinator of the bachelor of technology (environmental health) program at UCCB, said there are a number of reasons why the demand is increasing for inspectors. Recent incidents like the tainted water tragedy in Walkerton, Ont., and the SARS outbreak both brought about renewed interest in public health, he said. Gallivan added that many currently employed in the environmental public health field are nearing retirement and an influx of new graduates is needed. About 30 people will graduate from the program at UCCB this year and if they're willing to move, Gallivan said they're almost guaranteed employment in their field. Program
instructor Michelle
MacLean added graduates are well-prepared for a career in the field
upon
completion of the program. "The course is very intense. You learn a lot
in a short period of time," she said. NS/PEI Branch Honours
