Highlights The National Collaborator for Methods and Tools (NCCMT) - Public Health Agency of Canada

The National Collaborating Centre for Methods and Tools (NCCMT) has requested CIPHI branches to forward the following information to their member to advise them of the launching of this new initiative. A national CIPHI representative recently attended the founding National Advisory Group on May 16-17th as a representative for frontline environmental public health (EPH) practitioners.

At the meeting, the Vision and Mission statements were reviewed and approved along with a multi-year work plan. More information will be provided as the NCCMT begins to get underway and it should help clarify their important role of building a knowledge exchange system that is important for us to have between practitioners, health policy makers and research/academia.

This particular NCC is intended to support the other five NCCs in their efforts to provide the tools that are needed to improve the public health system.

With respect to networking with CIPHI, the NCCMT is very keen to engage the Institute and obtain input from its membership all across Canada. The NCCMT is hoping that CIPHI will assist in communicating various updates/surveys/initiatives to all EPH professionals to ensure that the EPH sector is well serviced.

If you like to read more on the various NCCs and the NCCMT in particular
– please go to http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/php-psp/ncc_e.html and peruse the article below on establishing an evidence-based centre and research network for Public Health in Canada.

CIPHI Strategic Plan
CIPHI is embarking on several important initiatives that will have long term impacts on the membership, the organization and on the public. Some of these initiatives are groundbreaking in scope and will change the way that CIPHI operates over the long term future.
A long range strategic plan was necessary to ensure that the NEC had a comprehensive plan in place before finalizing its decisions around the new initiatives, and for ensuring that all members of the NEC had broad agreement on the necessity and destination of the proposed changes.

    Environmental Public Health Week
    (Jan. 3-9, 2005)

Cape Breton Post: by Laura Jean Grant

SYDNEY - A profession which ensures Canadians have everything from safe drinking water to acceptable rental housing conditions is being recognized across the country this week. Environmental Public Health Week, which began Jan. 3 and concludes Jan. 9, is designed to celebrate the work of all environmental public health professionals and recognize the importance of environmental public health programs in the healthcare system. Bruce Morrison, an inspector with Public Health Services and president of the Nova Scotia/Prince Edward Island branch of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI), said the week is an important means of drawing attention to a profession which many people don't know much about. "It's the one time all the (CIPHI) associations across Canada come together to bring awareness to our role in public health in Canada," he said.

Members of the CIPHI work as inspectors to ensure environmental and public health standards are met in areas such as food and water safety, personal services facilities, childcare and institutional facilities, air quality and playground safety. Other areas of specialization for inspectors include infection control and communicable disease consultation, outbreak management, prevention of food-borne illness and onsite sewage disposal assessments. As an example of their many areas of expertise, Morrison noted several public health inspectors will travel to southeast Asia to provide assistance as that region copes with the death, destruction and many lingering health and environmental concerns which have developed since a tsunami hit Dec. 26. "A number of our colleagues across the country have volunteered to go to southeast Asia and we've also contributed to the Red Cross," he said.

Morrison said the demand for public health inspectors is on the rise and noted the University College of Cape Breton is one of only six educational institutions in the country which offer the program needed to become a certified a public health inspector. Gary Gallivan, co-ordinator of the bachelor of technology (environmental health) program at UCCB, said there are a number of reasons why the demand is increasing for inspectors. Recent incidents like the tainted water tragedy in Walkerton, Ont., and the SARS outbreak both brought about renewed interest in public health, he said. Gallivan added that many currently employed in the environmental public health field are nearing retirement and an influx of new graduates is needed. About 30 people will graduate from the program at UCCB this year and if they're willing to move, Gallivan said they're almost guaranteed employment in their field.

Program instructor Michelle MacLean added graduates are well-prepared for a career in the field upon completion of the program. "The course is very intense. You learn a lot in a short period of time," she said.
