It’s hard to believe it's already been two weeks since our National Annual Educational Conference (AEC) held in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia September 9-11, 2019, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Halifax Dartmouth hotel.

This year’s National AEC theme emphasized “Exploring the Edge “ showcased how we are steering new and existing environmental public health issues, focusing on three streams:

• Battling the Current: What is new and emerging • Working Through the Fog: Inspiring novel approaches & mindsets • Riding the Wave: Engaging & supporting one another

The conference featured 9 key note speakers, Stuart Knight – Five Decisions Successful People Make; Stephen Jones – Mental Health in the Workplace, Medical Officer Keynote Panel – Dr. Lawrence Loh, Dr. Michael Schwandt, Dr. Ryan Sommers, and Dr. Daniela Kempkens – Health Equity Providing Support, Evidence, and a Local Perspective; Dr. Michael Gniewek – Frontline Opiod Crisis, Nova Scotia Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Robert Strang – Opioid Strategy and Harm Reduction Strategies in NS, and Tareq Hadhad, of Peace by Chocolate – Resilience in Adverse Times and Peace; along with over 40 plenary speakers.

AEC and Hurricane Dorian

Eyes were glued to various weather channels and networks the week before the conference to see what was in store! By Saturday afternoon, just 1 day before registration and the welcome reception, the venue, and much of the province lost power. The Sunday welcome reception was held via candlelight, but conversations and spirits were lively. Fortunately, the venue had generators and there were some cold [safe] yummy treats for all that evening.

The situation proved PHI's are quite resilient. The Planning Committee decided the show must go on, without microphones, speakers, PowerPoints and with no power. Literally as the welcome announcements were made Monday morning, the power returned! The AEC continued as planned, and it was a success. One delegate commented, “With the power outage caused by Hurricane Dorian it obviously made things difficult, but your team really pulled together and made it look easy. Here's to storm chips and cold showers. Your keynote speakers and presenters were top quality and covered many public health topics which are of serious concern to public health inspectors.”

On behalf of the 2019 AEC CIPHI Conference Planning Committee, we would like to thank each of you for your attendance and support! We had a fabulous time meeting everyone from across the country and we are looking forward to seeing you again next year. Shout out and happy planning to the AEC 2020 Planning Committee in Durham Region.

See you next year!
